Yes . I know . I know that build no sense given that one of the most famous speculative stemma in all of Star Trek story is “ What does God need with a spaceship ? ” I also know it makes no good sense since Deep Space Nine ’s Sisko was the literal chosen one of the Bajoran god - equivalents . I know that and you know that . But my god , does Star Trek : Discovery not know that .
In a trailer to its Star Trek : Discovery cover story , Entertainment Weeklyshared this small anecdote from the set :
The director halts the action and Lorca , played by British actor Jason Isaacs of Harry Potter fame , step off the stage . The episode ’s writer , Kirsten Beyer , approaches to give a correction on his “ for God ’s sakes ” ad lib .

“ Wait , I ca n’t say ‘ God ’ ? ” Isaacs asks , amuse . “ I thought I could say ‘ God ’ or ‘ damn ’ but not ‘ goddamn . ’ ”
Beyer explains that Star Trek is creator Gene Roddenberry ’s vision of a scientific discipline - drive 23rd - C time to come where organized religion essentially no longer exists .
“ How about ‘ for f — ’s sake ’ ? ” he shoots back . “ Can I say that ? ”

“ you could say that before you could say ‘ God , ’ ” she dryly replies .
And bet , expect , I fully see that Roddenberry ’s future Earth had no faith . As a child , that was one of the many thing I loved about it . BUT . We say all sorts of things colloquially that we do n’t believe in . Most people do n’t believe that knocking on wood really forestalls bad fate , but it ’s still a ready to hand myopic cold shoulder for “ here ’s hoping nothing goes wrong . ” likewise , the horse and buggy is not a common conveyance these day , but we still say “ do n’t put the pushcart before the horse . ” I amply think that “ god ’s saki ” would still be an ejaculation in the future devoid of any actual spiritual belief . Hell , it ’s much there now .
I have said that I like bad Star Trek over upright other things many times . I wish the makeup of this gang , and I like that it ’s moving by from the captain and avoiding doing another show about ship named Enterprise . I lived through Voyager and Enterprise and did so gleefully . But Discovery is just … weird in its pick . Like , remember how it wasso adamantabout “ breaking ” Roddenberry ’s rule about interpersonal difference of opinion among the crew ? Despite the fact that this prescript had n’t been enforce for decades ? Why adhere to the varsity letter of Roddenberry ’s religion visual sensation rather than simply the spirit of that rule ? Everything , everything about this show confuses me .

Anyway , it premieres September 24 on CBS , with subsequent episode available on CBS All Access .
