Finding yet another more utilitarian program program for the Segway ’s balancing applied science , theiFlingrobot is able to pick up ping pong balls and fling them at target area , all while effortlessly equilibrate on two wheels .
In its current form the iFling ’s throwing arm could use a little work . It apply either a catapult orJai Alaiapproach to launching Ping River pong balls , which scantily seem to make it midway across a room . But its technique for picking up ball off the footing is very clever . It traps the ball in a groove located just inside each wheel , and then push back forward or back to rustle it up into its body where it can be mechanically load into its outstretched throwing arm .
The researchers at theUniversity of California , San Diego , desire to finally refine the iFling ’s capabilities so that a couple of them could head for the hills around playing gimmick with each other . Yawn . But there ’s actual potential here as a path to replace ball boys at lawn tennis match , outfield players in MLB , and a safe means to chop-chop pick up a live grenade and toss it back at an enemy in the hotness of battle .
