If aliens are extend to land tomorrow , and you’re able to only pick one movie to see the night before you struggle off the foreign drove , Battle : Los Angeles would be a jolly good choice .

This “ war movie with aliens , ” open today , is not elusive . It does n’t reveal anything young about the human precondition , or leave any performances that will be part of next February ’s Oscar montages . It does n’t reinvent the exotic invasion pic for a new contemporaries . But it does provide two solid hours of Marines fighting aliens — tooth , nail and grenade — and blowing shit up good . It ’s an vivid , fun action movie that suck you in and continue you pumping your clenched fist in the air .

Battle : Los Angeles is the movie Michael Bay would make , if he could focus on basic taradiddle - telling for long enough . Spoilers ahead …

So you might have noticed that Battle : Los Angeles is get under one’s skin pretty bad review in most places . I ’m kind of surprised , because I really , really liked this flick . It ’s a really thrilling military action movie , in which the alien invaders seem unstoppable at first until the human character painstakingly picture out how they can be vote down .

To be fair , Battle : Los Angeles has a ton of commonplace , the characters are more or less one - dimensional original , and there is more than enough cheeseball dialog to go around . But I think the reason why so many people have such a hate - on for this motion-picture show is because it ’s ultra - solemn , and very , very militaristic . There ’s not a ego - mocking bone in this film ’s trunk , nor does it every try out to be postmodern or wink at the audience .

It ’s one of the few activeness movies I ’ve reckon in years that ’s not a teeny bit embarrassed to be an natural action motion-picture show .

People are calling Battle : Los Angeles a video plot in movie cast — which does n’t sound like a unfit matter to me — but actually compared to tons of other action movies , it ’s way less video - gamey . There are no funny graphic on screen , no cartoony wearisome - mo sequence , and no other ocular tricks to signal gamey - cape . Instead , director Jonathan Liebesman move for a square - up warfare - motion-picture show feel , with lots of hand-held camera oeuvre and real “ murk of warfare . ” Unlike a pot of Michael Bay ’s oeuvre , the trembling - cam never bewilder to the level where I was confused about the action mechanism , though . And the legal action is jolly kinetic and fun , peculiarly a mess of the scenes of the tiny Marine squad fighting urgently to get past overwhelming number of foreign destruction machine .

The film ’s earnestness is what really won me over , and I especially liked Aaron Eckhart ’s performance . Eckhart gives his all and then some , as Staff Sgt . Michael Nantz , who ’s about to withdraw from the Marines after a missionary work in Iraq where some of his men died . Everybody blames Nantz for the deaths of his man , and when he ’s pulled back into action in the backwash of the alien encroachment , his new platoon does n’t trust him to watch their asses . He ’s saddled with a newbie lieutenant and a wary police squad , including the brother of one of the men who died on Nantz ’s old team .

So Nantz not only has to navigate in a confusing human beings of alien monsters , he also has to gain ground the trust of his human race . And he ’s also tasked with deliver some civilians . Eckhart lectures everybody about the Marine feeling — the regiment ’s slogan is based on a saying by one of its former leaders who was ordain to retrograde during World War I : “ Retreat ? Hell , I just got here ! ” And his finding to turn up he can be a in force leader , to get the civilians evacuated safely , and to block up these fucking stranger somehow is what drives the film . Eckhart oozes a weary valor and an extra helping of gung - ho — basically , he ’s a walking Marines recruitment poster .

And the last half hour of the film is fundamentally a non - stop series of“fuck yeah ” momentsin which Eckhart and companionship prove that Marines Do n’t Quit and that a Few Good Men ( plus Michelle Rodriguez ) will triumph over anything you bemuse at them . If you ’re allergic to pro - military propaganda , you might require to have a booster station shot before seeing this film .

Good Character Development Includes The All - Important “ F*@% Yeah ” Moment

confront with a moving-picture show that takes itself this gravely , and is this corny and jam - packed with commonplace , the innate reply might well be to make fun of it . But if you could go with it , the “ Ooo - rah ” spirit in this film just bear you along . By the end of the moving picture , you ’ll either be falling out of your seat laughing , or root on and rooting for our heroes . I in reality recommend the latter — it ’s in reality more fun to enjoy this celluloid on its own terminus . I do n’t honestly call back it ’s any cheesier than the original Predator , a pic with which it share a certain amount of DNA .

And here ’s the matter — the basic skeleton of the flick is about people doing trouble - resolution , which is something I fucking dearest . Not just problem - work out like try out to find out the stranded civilians and then render to determine an evac point that is n’t rubble . But also , we see Eckhart figuring out stuff like : what is the aliens ’ weak point ? How can they be defeat ? ( Eckhart does n’t say “ If it bleed , we can kill it , ” but he comes close a couple times . ) He also drop a lot of time deduct that the alien aircraft are remote-controlled drones , which home in on wireless signals — and he use this knowledge to set a bunker . And finally , with the help of Michelle Rodriguez ’s tactical officeholder , he figures out the stranger have a hidden command - and - restraint pith , and then tracks down its location .

Given a alternative between a mute action movie where hoi polloi punch and shoot clobber senselessly , or a dumb action movie where people figure stuff out and expend logic , I ’d right smart rather see the latter .

And because the movie takes great pains to show us the humans figuring out stuff about the aliens , the natural progress from “ the aliens are unstoppable ” to “ the aliens can be fought ” does n’t feel hokey . Without giving too much by , there ’s no wizard computer virus in this movie . There ’s noweakness like “ they ’re supersensitised to water , ” or “ Slim Whitman ’s music kill them . ”

But here ’s the bad news — the account for why the unknown have come to Earth is total hokum . It ’s so dumb , it almost drop back the whole motion-picture show down with it , and it made me slap my heading repeatedly . Spoiler alert : The aliens are here for our water system . Because apparently , Earth is the only position in the universe that has water in its smooth state . ( To be middling , though , this account come from a talking caput on a video set in one scene , and he might just be an idiot . )

And there are great deal of other nitpicks — like , there are several startling moment that are telegraphed so heavily , Marconi would see them coming . For object lesson , when the marines pick up something act and it turns out to be a hotdog , you know that the aliens are going to attack a 2d later — because that pass off in every airheaded action movie . ( Here ’s a clip of that scene . )

So yeah , I would never call conflict : Los Angeles a great movie , or claim that it ’s proceed to make your teeth whiter or anything . But if you want to see what the Transformers picture would be like if they were focused less on selling toys and more on kicking your ass , then this picture show is well worth check out .
