At New York Comic Con , io9 overhear up with writer Jeff Lemire , current writer of DC Comics ’ New 52 titles Animal Man and Frankenstein , Agent of S.H.A.D.E.
Animal Man isone of our favorite books as of late , so we were terrifically enthuse to hear about Lemire ’s program for the biologically kooky superhero ( and how Frankenstein vocalize like a certain Kindergarten Cop ) .

So , what ’s your master plan for Animal Man ?
If you readthe whole Vertigo Animal Man serial publication of 89 issue or whatever , each writer has a completely unlike take on his rootage . If you attempt to put them all together , they contradict one another . I had to pick and pick out to make up a new bloodline that makes sense to new lector .
It ’s about taking stuff like the family aspect of Grant Morrison ’s rivulet and concepts likeThe Redand boiling them down into one Modern software that ’s really approachable to proofreader who did n’t know anything about him . That was my challenge as the author .

In the first offspring , you put yourself as a magazine newsman interviewing Animal Man . Grant Morrison famously wrote himself into Animal Man . Will Jeff Lemire the DC fictional character be appear in future issues ?
No , that was just my cheeky nod to the whole theme . The next few issues are really coolheaded , with Buddy and [ his daughter ] Maxine going into The Red for the first time . They institute the reader with them to take on these characters phone The Totems , who are all the former avatars of The Red . They ’re new characters I created , they ’re like The Red ’s rendering ofThe Parliament of Trees . When they meet The Totems , they start to understand what Maxine is , what The Red is , all these things readers have been wonder about .
Animal Man and Swamp Thing will be cut through over , as will O.M.A.C. and Frankenstein , Agent of S.H.A.D.E. What ’s the story behind those issues ?

Dan Didio on O.M.A.C. was doing a monster Scripture as well , so we said “ Why not ? ” When I was growing up , I loved [ O.M.A.C. illustrator ] Keith Giffen ’s study , so the chance to form with him was a material thrill . We did n’t desire to a traditional crossover , but it ’s the same fib tell in each book with different points of prospect , like Rashomon .
With Swamp Thing , it ’s a much crowing story . Animal Man and Swamp Thing have so many commonalities in tone and mood.[Swamp Thing author ] Scott Snyderand me were flirt around with this well before the playscript came out . Scott and I are close Quaker and we talk all the time , so it grew out of our conversations . Even though the books are n’t directly connected yet , readers will get to see commonality pop up in each . Toward the end of the first class on the books , the stories will meet and that will spin around off into a really bounteous story .

In Frankenstein , I really hump how S.H.A.D.E. drawing card Father Time is now a petty girl who bosses around the cranky monster . What ’s his / her end game ?
I ca n’t give away too much , but Father Time is a overlord at playing Frank and keeping him around . Frankenstein ’s immortal and can do whatever he need , but for whatever intellect , he adhere with Father Time and S.H.A.D.E. Why does Frankenstein do this ? That ’s the thing I ’ll easy divulge .
I care how florid and bombastic Frank is . Do you have a Frankenstein voice you imagine when writing him ?

He ’s a romantic and a poet , but he ’s also completely humorless . Everything around him is so ludicrous and over - the - top , so Frank fix the utter straight military man . The vocalisation fathom somewhere between Arnold Schwarzenegger and well , Frankenstein .
Any update onThe Essex County movie ?
Not yet . material ’s tardily happening , but I ca n’t really announce it . I ’m never one to care too much if my work becomes adapted , I make comic books .

And what ’s next with your post - apocalyptical Vertigo seriesSweet Tooth ?

I ’m doing an electric discharge right now with cartoonist Matt Kindt . It ’s the heavy reveal what the pest is . I did n’t want Sweet Tooth to be one of those rule book where you ’re expect for the reveal until the final outcome . I want to get it out of the way and move the patch ahead . After that , I come back on [ fine art chores ] and start moving the book to its close .
