DI : Amy Sedaris tell she care she came up with the musical theme for this leger first . I ’d have to harmonize with her . So tell us : How did you come up with the idea ?
HC : I’ve been compile found grocery store shopping lists for years " “ decades , really . I ’ve always been fascinated by how much you’re able to tell about a person from their abandoned list . To me , shopping lists are the novel memoir . DI : Was there ever the temptation to fictionalise some of the lists to make them even comic ?
HC : Totally no need to . There are some that I do n’t think I could ever have add up up with : " Mouse Traps . Cheese . Mouse . “ ( Yeah , for real ! ) or " Whole Milk . Heavy Cream . Ice Cream . String Cheese . gasolene - Ex ( ! ! ! ) " ( double-dyed with the three exclamation points ! ) . To me , the humor comes in the quirkiness of these real citizenry point their humanity .

DI : Where’d you get the wonderful idea to dress up and personate the type you imagined publish these things ?
HC : Whenever I find a shopping leaning , I straightaway imagine who it is that sound with the list . I have a background knowledge in performance art and doing persona ( in fact two of the theatrical role I created once ended up on Entertainment Tonight in the same week , without anyone ever knowing they were both me ) , so it was only natural to take it to the next stone’s throw and BECOME the shoppers . Also inÀ la CartI wrote account about each , delve even further into their mind and life .
DI : I bed the flash display you put together to kick upstairs the book . I understand you made it all by yourself . For the design - understanding in the blog , how did you make it ?
HC : Thanks ! SinceÀ la Cartis a little offbeat , I found myself explain the premiss a portion . So I make up one’s mind to just make a curt film explain it all . I first wrote out the script , then collected or created all the images in Photoshop , storyboarding it . I have a busyweb conception biz , so I had one of my brilliant software engineer put it all into trice . After that , we score it with music and that was that .
DI : I hear you ’ve been around the country on record duty tour late . Is it on-key you ’re not just doing bookstores , but also supermarket ? Really ? supermarket ? ? ?
HC : That was my plan , but it did n’t quite forge out logistically . But I HAVE been doing quite a bit of closet in the supermarkets . I took a reporter from Entertainment Weekly grocery shopping ( and dumpster dive for leaning ! ) and also one from Wall Street Journal " “ which was filmed and include on the WSJ website . DI : What ’s going on with Fresh Yarn ? I know we have a lot of originative writers read our web log . Can they still render ? Is the WWW site still up and running ?
HC : YES ! ! I recently lionize the quaternary anniversary ofFRESH YARN , my literary situation devoted to personal essay . I am still doing it all , though more sporadically ( I started out featuring raw installment of 6 personal essay every other hebdomad , then go to every three workweek , once a month , and now when time allows ! ) It ’s been such a pleasure to be able-bodied to share the talents of established writers ( novelists , screenwriters , journalists , etc ) as well as previously unpublished author . I just launched installment # 52 last week so there are FRESH essay up now ( plus 4 years of archived piece ) !
DI : What are you crop on these day ?
HC : Mostly promoting A la Cart properly now . I ’m finishing up a tour of duty , still doing interview , radio and tv set show , etc . Also doing wise YARN and Fly HC , and daydreaming about the next Good Book !
