By now , we all know aboutBatwomangate , in which DC forestall the marriage of Batwoman Kate Kane to her fiancée Maggie Sawyer — causing co - writer J.H. Williams III and W. Haden Blackman to quit the series . DC has been in recovery manner , and DC co - publisher Dan DiDio strain to explain the situation . Here ’s why he was still completely wrong .

Here ’s how DiDio fight down DC ’s conclusion at a venire at this past weekend ’s Baltimore Comic - Con ( courtesy ofThe Hollywood newsman ):

“ They put on a cape and cowl for a cause . They ’re committed to defending others — at the sacrifice of all their own personal instincts . That ’s something we reenforce . If you front at every one of the characters in the Batman family , their personal lives kind of sucking …
Tim Drake , Barbara Gordon , and Kathy Kane — it ’s wonderful that they stress to establish personal lives , but it ’s also just as important that they put it away as they know what they are accomplishing as the torpedo takes precedence over everything else . That is our authorisation , that is our order , that is our stand with our part . ”
Okay . Let me say I truly believe that Dan DiDio truly conceive that its significant to keep DC ’s superheroes unmarried — to keep the focus of their books on their superheroics instead of their relationships . For a superhero fellowship , that sounds somewhat sensitive .

Except it ’s not , because if DiDio is say that heroes ca n’t get marry because it ’s part of their personal lives — and he is — then he ’s saying that heroes should n’t have any relationships . Unless there ’s something specifically horrible about Italian sandwich tie , matrimony is just one shape of personal relationship , which also let in family , friend , and even technically archenemies . If DC ’s heroes need to put aside their personal relationships , then why the the pits are Superman and Wonder Woman dating ? Is it the lack of a marriage security — a fictitious piece of paper — that somehow pee this relationship o.k. , but not Batwoman ’s engagement to Maggie Sawyer ?
count , relationships are a with child part of what make stories interesting — not just in mirthful playscript , but in fiction . Take Scott Snyder ’s recent “ decease of the Family ” tale in Batman . Sure , the Joker is running around sample to drive all of Batman ’s protégés insane , and Batman must halt him . But it ’s how the joker bear upon Batman ’s relationships with Robin , Red Robin , Nightwing and Batgirl that ease up the story its depth and its emotional involvement . There ’s a reason it ’s called Death of the “ Family ” , and that ’s because class is the most basic personal relationship there is .
What is it about “ house ” that ’s ok with DC , while union is n’t ?

If DC does n’t have a problem with romance , and it does n’t actually have a job with personal relationships , it may just have a problem with man and wife in worldwide . Of course , the New 52 start with heroes like Animal Man and The Phantom Stranger being hook up with , but both those marriages have been wrack , so perhaps DC is being consistent there ( although one might say that by have these marriage in the first stead , some fantabulous storytelling opportunity were ply in both cases , but whatever ) .
But Batwoman does not have an activity build tune in Toys gas constant Us . I would guess that the median age of Batwoman readers is in the mid-20s ; in fact , the comic is stag Teen Plus , which DC aver “ Appropriate for reader maturate 15 and older . May moderate moderate violence , mild profanity , graphic mental imagery and/or suggestive themes . ”
Batwoman is n’t on the same “ icon ” tier as Batman , Superman , Wonder Woman — and thus no one would be overturned if she got marry ( with the exception of Dan DiDio , apparently ) . It does n’t limit her character like it would with DC ’s top - level heroes , and it would n’t affect any nestling ’s ability to relate to her because kids are n’t even let to read Batwoman .

Look , I believe that DiDio think he ’s doing the correct thing , but I still do n’t suppose his conclusion makes any common sense . The only problem with Kate and Maggie getting marry is in his head , and he ’s break to foreclose all DC characters from getting married — and male child , he ’d considerably , because otherwise the only marriage he ’ll be denying is the same - sex one — all he ’s doing is continue writer from furthering relationships , let reader know that no love affair in DC comedian ever have a fortune of live by editorial fiat , and deny narrator to secern sealed types of tale .
And one other matter . Here ’s a quick list of events that have been shown on panel since the New 52 debuted :
• Superman blew Dr. Light ’s head off

• Catwoman was diagrammatically shot in the head ( later reveal to have been Martian Manhunter in camouflage )
• A 12 - year - old boy ( Damian Wayne ) was shot to expiry and pass in his founding father ’s arms
( And that ’s not to mention the infamous sexuality scenes between Batman and Catwoman , Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor , and Starfire and … well , anybody . )

await , even if DC has the safe intentions in the populace , the fact of the matter is that DC has shown youngster being diagrammatically killed , but wo n’t allow a fictional character to have a loving relationship de jure recognized . That ’s ugly . And no amount of logical thinking in the world will change that fact .
