Less than a thousand year ago , a bird roamed Madagascar that stood as tall as an elephant . Elephant birds are a much - discussed specie , given their immense size and the fact that , since they only went nonextant a few hundred eld ago , some humans must have interacted with them . The handsome ones are presumed to have been the height of an elephant and theweight of a horse . They ’re cousins of birds like the emu , cassowary , Struthio camelus , and Chinese gooseberry .
The researchers engage x - irradiation images of two species of elephant bird to reconstruct the insides of the birds ’ foreland . They did the same for a songster and a shorebird for comparison . The elephant bird ’s cousin , the kiwi vine , also has pocket-sized opthalmic lobe , so the researchers infer that the elephant bird , too , could be nocturnal .
