severely . Based on this episode , it has never get going well . For its midseason closing curtain , Forever make out to deliver its best episode to date . I ’m serious , this was a tightly - plotted sequence that really crop . I ca n’t believe I ’m tell it , but the mysterious Adam yield this show a welcome jolt .
This week ’s paper is trustingness . Trust and H2O . It wrench out that Henry has a complicated relationship with both . Spoilers …
Last week ended with Henry getting kidnapped by “ Adam , ” the fellow immortal who had been calling Henry in the early episodes of the season , before disappearing for a while . He get back full force , saying that Henry did n’t believe that Adam was an immortal like him . So he proves it by dash himself in the head , disappear ( like Henry does when he dies ) , and leaving Henry to drown in an out of control taxi .

Henry comes to , as is his wo nt , defenseless in the East River . Which I think is an improvement over swim in the Hudson . But .. barely . These are not human - favorable rivers . This sequence win me over immediately when two cops see Henry , and one of them suppose , “ Is he nekkid ? ”
This was followed by Henry sit in Lieutenant Reece ’s position , stuttering out an account about being a bare somnambulist . And then he walks out into the precinct , to the applause of everyone in attendance . This one short instant did more to show that Henry was becoming one of them than anything else in any other sequence . Plus , Mike Hanson is rapidly becoming my favorite semi - humourous side character . He presents Henry with a natural endowment of a Speedo and goggles . Which , yes . This is exactly the variety of shit - gift you do to your friends .
Meanwhile , the taxi driver that Adam kill to do his little demonstration for Henry is the latest case Jo and company have see . His death was from a blade - stabbing . They apace establish that he ’s a cab driver and Henry makes a very bizarre comment that should have puzzle him way more side - eye than it did : “ The cab may no longer be on realm . ” perchance all those episode of Henry spouting insanely specific and weird tax write-off have just given him a notch .

( Also , that bit where Lucas translates Henry ’s medical cant to English ending with the hemorrhoids bit and Lucas say “ No translation necessary ” is majuscule . This episode is full of these prissy moments showing the kinetics at play . )
Henry gets another pass when his pocket watch is discover in the cab and Jo just assumes he dropped it . And when he decide to go diving for the ordnance Adam shot himself with — and gets arrested again — Henry let out of that with just some compulsory counseling .
One rendering of all these things is that the cop characters are unintelligent to not call into question these matter more carefully . But they actually play really nicely into this workweek ’s overall theme : trust . Henry mostly seems to recollect he ’s just getting lucky . But really , all these hoi polloi desire Henry . And they want to help him because he ’s their protagonist and confrere . Henry ’s clearly been lacking these affair and is incapable to consider that he can tell them things . Not everything , even though Abe is pressing him to at least tell Jo .

In the flashbacks , we see why Henry is middling much a human tragedy . We ’re in the Charring Cross Asylum after his first death , where he ’s figure out that trying to tell his wife that he ca n’t die was a error . He insists that he ’s cured and know that he was “ disconnected ” before . The doctor in the mental hospital says they ’re become to use the very scientific new “ hydrotherapy ” to make certain he ’s cured .
Yes . It is waterboarding . How astute of you to guess .
I am not go to touch that with a ten foot perch except to say : Between this and the fact that his first expiry was him getting photograph and then thrown into the Atlantic , Henry should have some pretty terrible hydrophobia .

So Henry ’s reluctance to swear anyone but the person he farm makes some horse sense . And if we see his missing of the cues that the NYPD detectives he work with faith and like him as him distrusting his instincts after the disaster with his wife , then it all go .
Henry ’s mandate counsel is with a psychologist name Lewis , playact by Burn Gorman as the center between Owen Harper and Hermann Gottlieb . I palpate bad for the show that I guessed the twist found solely on the fact that Gorman played Owen , who also had a snatch of an issuance with not expire . There were actual other hint , but that ’s the one that I instantly used .
( I could have also used the fact that the official abstract actually name Gorman ’s role as “ Anonymous Caller ” which ruins the twist a minute . in earnest , ABC ? )

Lewis is very slick , which should have been the first cue . He ’s all favorable to Henry about being another British expat . He almost get Henry to really enter in therapy . He also questions Henry about who he talks to and if he has “ anyone his own years ” to spill to . Yeah , that line is clue identification number two .
While Henry ’s getting his head shrunk , Jo and Mike are finding the person the antique gun that Adam killed himself with belongs to . He is , of course , dead . And he ’s been autopsied while alive , using Henry ’s own preferred autopsy prick of a hunting tongue . Of course he ’s being framed . Henry runs back to his desk and his knife is brood in blood .
This is middling much how Jo finds him . The picture of innocence .

alternatively of giving it to Jo with the explanation that clearly someone ’s seek to frame him , Henry bolts for Abe , suitcases , and some fictive passport . Jo get there before they can result , while Henry is doing everyone the party favour of suffer there with the bloody slaying weapon system in his helping hand . Abe tells Henry to just tell Jo .
We do n’t get to see what he tells her , we do see Henry telling the Lieutenant and Mike that he has a stalker that has been calling him and that , when he saw the utter autopsy victim , he suppose leave would solve the trouble . Henry ’s reasonably give up to being a defendant , but is surprised again when the Lieutenant just says they ’ll get the stalker .
At this compass point it becomes absolutely harebrained that she severalize him to go autopsy the already - autopsied . Even if they believe that Henry is n’t a killer , which is fine and I actually wish as an example of how weird - out - of - touch Henry has made friends , he utterly should n’t still be on this investigation . My god .

Both victims bring at a mental infirmary , where Jo and Henry get Lewis to differentiate them about a affected role who recollect he ’s immortal and has been found naked in rivers . That Lewis was so willing to portion out this information is clue number three .
The genial patient have away from them , but read up in Henry ’s office ask to be killed with a sword . Henry refuses , but end up killing the guy anyway to protect himself and Abe . The mental patient just dies , though , and does n’t disappear like Adam did at the start of the episode .
picture : Not the anonymous company .

Because Adam is Lewis , who calls Henry and state that he may have given the poor dead humans the mental picture that being stamp out by an immortal could glide by the status on . He did it mostly for shits and giggles and to give Henry a raw experience for the first time in centuries : killing .
The tight focal point on Henry , his immortality , and his faith subject made this the best instalment of the season . The fact that it very efficaciously showed Henry as part of this team , in a way that did n’t seem squeeze , was great . It was unfortunately so good that I was constantly prompt that it had n’t been this effective in the ten episode before this . We should have spent those ten installment see Henry ’s relationship with the Lieutenant , Jo , Mike , and even Lucas develop into the billet we see in this sequence . But we did n’t , really . I can only cogitate of one episode that really used this theme — the one where Henry last out for a drink with everyone at the goal .
Otherwise , the whole premise is that Henry is so good at his job that they trust him . Which is fine , but not closely as plentiful . Nor does it make his refusal to tell anyone his arcanum a real battle , which it should be . If they trust him this much , him keep open this much of a secret should make him feel guilty . But if they ’re just colleagues , then it ’s not really a struggle .

On the other hand , Burn Gorman ’s appearing meet me with joy and I sincerely go for that Henry still has to go to therapy sessions with him , since he ca n’t exactly expose him . That would be hysterical .
last thoughts :
The other thing that involve exploration is why Henry entrust Abe ’s other adopt parent so much . His first wife was the one who got him sent to the mental hospital , he should mistrust the instinct to tell cleaning woman he love most of all . The fact that it turn out well in that example should rehabilitate Henry ’s trust instincts a bit more

Henry deduct a caboodle about Lewis in their therapy seance . Was any of it lawful or did Lewis plant all of that stuff there for Henry to see as a way of stay fresh him from figuring out that he was Adam ? I ’m leaning towards the latter , since he also managed to get Henry ’s autopsy style exactly right .
Take a present moment to savor the approximation that Adrian Pasdar ’s voice has somehow been coming from Burn Gorman ’s mouth this whole prison term .
Did anyone else get a creepy serial killer vibe when Lucas distinguish medical examiners as artists ?

On the other hand , full acknowledgment to the show for having Lucas name - check Highlander . I like to think that Lewis used that as the base for his horrible story to the mental patient he sacrificed to Henry .
