The story is set up in a noir , Victorian - tint metropolis where humans , fay and other creatures carbon monoxide - survive . The original playscript told of a police detective investigating a serial killer whale who is preying on mystical creatures , only to witness that he has become the prime suspect in the murders .
Del Toro will co - write the pilot with Travis Beacham ( Pacific Rim ) and Rene Echevarria . Del Toro will also direct the pilot , and this is come out to vocalise a circle like GDT ’s collaborative study on The Strain ( which had quite a lovely cowcatcher itself ) .
