That sinless period where what piddling we screw of The Force Awakens was thedebate over the feasibleness of Kylo Ren ’s lightsaberwas a tremendous clip . But it turn out aside from the public debate about if it was THE BEST or THE WORST , from a hard-nosed point of view , the motion picture ’s sabers had two new feature that at last achieved Lucas ’ original vision for the airscrew : heft , and light .
In anew interview with The Telegraph , Adam Driver shortly speak about the initial controversy over the unconventional design of his lightsaber , but quickly diverged into some interesting little factoid about the actual strong-arm habitus of the saber used on the set of the motion picture :
When George Lucas did the first film , he need them to be really grievous , but they could n’t quite envision it out . This is the first time that we ’re actually press with the whole lightsaber too . Before it was just the hilt with [ something ] like an feeler or a greenish control stick , but this was commonwealth of the prowess – it actually transmit off lighting .

It ’s a minor matter , but Driver ’s right — in the original flick , the lighsabers were at first covered in a reel of rotating reflective mag tape that shone light back at the camera . They were afterwards advance with thin aluminum rod attached to the hilt as a road map for rotoscoping effects to be added in position - production . Eventually , in the prequels , the effect was altogether digital — which meant , for all six moving-picture show , the blades of stark dark-green , blue , red , and empurpled Department of Energy never actually let out any light on their environs or their users . You do n’t really notice it at first , but looking back , it ’s amazingly jarring .
Combined with an increased weight to replicate an actual steel being swung around , and the fact that The Force Awakens ’ sabers actually emitted light — we’ve already come across examples thanks toFinn and Kylo ’s lightsaberduel in the trailers — it seems like the upcoming movie could be the close to a logical or realistic take on lightsaber duel we ’ve ever go through in a Star Wars film .
Or , you know . About as tight to “ veridical ” as you ’d ever get to something so outlandishly fantastical as Star Wars .
