James Van Der Beekis enjoyingHalloweenwith his big brood.
On Tuesday, theDawson’s Creekalum, 46, showed off his six kids picks for Halloween costumes this yearon Instagram, penning a lengthy caption about the holiday. His kids all chose different costumes, ranging from angels to skeletons to James' own costume, which was “steampunk pirate.”
The actor is dad toJeremiah, 2,Gwendolyn, 5,Emilia, 7,Annabel, 9,Joshua, 11, andOlivia, 13, whom he shares with wife Kimberly.
“I believe it’s healthy to dress up and play make-believe every once in a while. To step into someone else’s shoes and dance within new energetics,” the father of six said of the holiday.
He even weighed in on the candy debate, writing, “As for the candy? As parents, we’re trying to upgrade. I’ve had some success offering my kids cash for their stash (an offer, for the record, I would NOT have taken as a kid 😂).““But with everything going on right now… a night of fantasy was just what we needed,” he added.

He also gave some insight into his own costume, which he claims his daughter asked him to go as.
“For those who are keeping score at home… my daughter suggested I go as a ‘Steampunk Pirate.’ Mission: accepted, kid 🏴☠️.”
Earlier this month, Jamesreflected on his youngest turning twoin an Instagram post.
“Two years ago today,” he began his caption. “We were done having kids. We’d ‘closed the birth portal.’ And then you came kicking down the door, in your signature style. Because we needed you. And you knew it.“The doting dad expressed that he’s “grateful every day for you, bubs.”
“You’re a toy-throwing, football-loving little Texas dude, a class A++ snuggler, and getting to experience life from your point of view has made me fall in love with the world in a whole new way,” he continued. “I love reading to you. I love watching all your decisions and agendas. And your belly laughs might just be the best thing in the universe.““Thank you for teaching me what it is to live life with unapologetic joy, and hopeful abandon,” he concluded, then joking, “Can we maybe try sleeping through the night night, now? The whole night? Like, ALL the way through? 🙏.”

In May, the actor spoke to PEOPLE abouthaving a “humbling” lifewith his six kids. While discussing his family’s commitment to an hour of uninterrupted play each day, Van Der Beek said that getting all six of his kids outside “feels like the antidote to getting on a screen.”
Talking about spending time with his kids in and around their Texas home, Van Der Beek told PEOPLE, “We’re lucky enough to have the space to kick a ball around.”
