When NASA is ready to post humans to Mars , it will do so using the Orion spacecraft , launched via a United Launch Alliance Delta IV Heavy rocket . An unmanned trial flight is scheduled for Thursday , December 4 at 7:05 am Eastern Standard Time from Kennedy Space Center in Florida .

The Orion spacecraft , built by Lockheed Martin , will finish a 4.5   time of day - longsighted test flight at an EL of 5,800 kilometers   ( 3,600 mile ) , which is about 15 times the distance to the International Space Station .
